A sustainable future, built on innovation

As a leading UK food-to-go manufacturer, we accept accountability for our environmental footprint, from electricity usage and food waste to the entire supply chain.
This is not a paper exercise; it is operational change driven by innovation to achieve Net Zero through genuine reduction and not external offsetting!

We firmly believe offsetting is akin to throwing your rubbish into someone else’s garden, reduction is the only viable path.

We are constantly finding ways to close the loop on waste and take control of our ingredient sourcing.

  • Waste-to-Energy: Since 2014, we have maintained closed-loop systems with partners like Wicks Manor Farm and redirected all food waste to anaerobic digesters that help power Chelmsford.
  • The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread: In 2010 we started the tomato revolution as true pioneers by saying goodbye to the soggy sandwich and hello to Intense™ tomatoes. We were the first to introduce these to the UK market as leading innovation specialists and even sparking attention from Channel 4 with our very own documentary with Food Unwrapped (still available on catchup!).  We still use Intense™ tomatoes to this day and now so does the rest of the UK sandwich industry!
  • Long-Term Milestones: We were among the first in 2009 to carbon footprint a sandwich. Our ongoing work includes using only FSC-certified card and moving our delivery fleet to electric vehicles on short rounds.

The S3 Project

Our commitment starts with our people and our processes right here in Chelmsford.

Smart People + Smart Process = Smart Factory S3: The S3 project embeds C02e footprint visibility into every product and process in real time. We are using gamification and incentivisation to drive down emissions and costs. Our transformative change aims to reduce energy consumption by 30% and food waste by 10%.

Project Scope: Our long running waste reduction strategy focuses on a weekly assessment of our top 40 materials. Allowing us to implement preventative action, which includes training, monitoring, and even new product development to maximise efficiency and minimise high C02e food waste.
